The University of Tartu School of Law and the Estonian Academic Association of Law are pleased to invite you to a lecture by prof. Hans Petter Graver (University of Oslo) “How Autocrats Dismantle the Rule of Law // Kuidas autokraadid õõnestavad õigusriiki” on 22 September at 5PM in the meetings hall of the Supreme Court of Estonia (Lossi 17, Tartu).

The lecture is in English and will not be available online.

The lecture will give an overview of autocratic techniques for dismantling the rule of law, based on studies of Hungary, Poland, and the USA. It will then address what judges can do to push back attacks and to protect the rule of law. The experience of the resistance by the Polish judges is an important example and inspiration.

Hans Petter Graver is a professor at the University of Oslo, an honorary doctor of multiple universities and a former president of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. In his research, he has examined and published on the topics of the judiciary, their ethics and independence.

The discussion will be moderated by Priit Pikamäe, the director of the School of Law, opening address will be delivered by Kersti Kerstna-Vaks.

Please note that all guests are required to go through a security check and produce a valid identity document. During the security check, all bags will be scanned and the guests will be required to walk through a metal detector. In order to streamline the process, we recommend not bringing large bags.
