Professor Dag Michalsen at the University of Oslo will hold a public lecture on "The German Constitution of Weimar 1919−1933−2026" on the 14th April 2026 at 12.15 at Vanemuise 46 – 225.
The 1919 Constitution of the Weimar Republic was one of the most important constitutional documents in post-World War I Europe. Among other things, it served as one of the key foreign models for the drafting of the first Constitution of the Republic of Estonia (1920).
Dag Michalsen, Professor of Legal and Constitutional History at the University of Oslo, will provide an overview of the development of the Weimar Constitution, analyze its most significant legal choices, and examine their impact both during the Weimar Constitution’s validity in Germany and more broadly and over the long term in Europe.
Professor Michalsen has conducted very thorough research into Norway’s little-known but entirely unique constitutional tradition. As such, he possesses an excellent knowledge base that helps shed light on lesser-known aspects of the Weimar Constitution and the broader development of modern constitutionalism in Europe.
