About the School of Law
The School of Law teaches law at all levels of higher education. Since 2002, it offers BA and MA programmes both in Tartu and Tallinn. The School of Law has two English-taught MA programmes as well: Information Technology Law (1-year programme in Tartu) and International Law and Human Rights (2-year programme in Tallinn). Doctoral studies take place in Tartu. The University of Tartu is the only university in Estonia to award doctorates in law.
The School of Law cooperates closely with the Ministry of Justice, the Estonian Bar Association, the Prosecutor’s Office, the Estonian Chamber of Notaries, the Supreme Court of Estonia, the Estonian Lawyers Union, the Office of the Chancellor of Justice, the Estonian Association of Judges, the Estonian Academic Law Society and other legal institutions.
In addition, the School of Law has many collaboration contacts with research centres and law faculties in other countries which allows students and academic staff to study, teach and carry out reasearch at universities across the globe. Read more about our international cooperation activities.
Since 2016, the School of Law is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences along with seven other structural units.
Why study at the School of Law?
The School of Law incorporates the bulk of Estonia’s legal research potential and actively participates in shaping Estonia’s legal policy. The School of Law is the number one law school in Estonia and the Baltic states (rated 251-300 in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019). Its mission is to ensure the training of highly qualified lawyers and to make sure that research and development are undertaken in all areas of Estonian law.

The academic staff of the School of Law
The academic staff of the School of Law has published many articles important for the development of Estonia’s statehood and legal doctrine, more than a hundred legal monographs, textbooks and teaching aids.
Juridica International. Law review
The School of Law also publishes the only Estonian law journal Juridica and its English edition Juridica International which introduces Estonian legal order and development of legal thought to foreign readers.
